Basic Dog Obedience Training

Basic Dog Obedience Training

The interest in basic dog obedience training has increased much over the last few years, as dog owners are starting to realize the difference it makes to have better communication with our beloved pet.  Basic obedience is something that I believe every dog should learn because it is fulfilling and fun - even small dogs can start with obedience training in special “puppy kindergarten classes”!

What Is Included Inside Basic Dog Obedience Training?

To start, there are5 basic commands your dog has to learn: sit, stay, heel, come and down.  These commands are taught using praise and repetition, and following a hand sign.

Sit. With this command you are teaching your dog to stop.  You teach your pet little by little by pulling up the collar and pressing down gently the dog to sit.  Once the dog has sit by your side facing forward you praise the action by giving the dog a treat or toy.

Stay. Once your dog is sit, this command will teach him to remain on the same spot.

Heel. This command teach your dog to walk along with you.  There shouldn’t be any pulling or lagging while you walk with your dog.  The repetition of this exercise and continuous correction will help your dog maintain the position on your side.

Come. This is very simple, you call your dog, and the dog must come to you.  With each repetition, the distance must be longer, not forgetting to praise the dog every time he reaches you.

Down. This teaches the dog to lie down on the stomach, not on the back.

These are the 5 basic dog obedience training commands. It is important that when teaching your dog obedience, you prevent training burn-out, so keep your practices down to one per day, for the amount of time the exercise requires.
